pow-BOOM Now, put both of those together, and crank it up to about 160-180 decibels for a split second... this is what is sounds like when lightning hits the end of your cove... and I don't live on a big cove... It's an odd experience, losing your hearing... and also, when lightning hits what most people would consider "close" you have just enough time brace and you're normally shaken up... well, there was no time to do anything... the light and the sound hit at the same time... after that, oddly enough, I wasn't shaken up... it was like the addrenaline rush of a roller coaster, and I wanted to ride again, after someone gave me a pair of earplugs... I started trying to herd siblings back into the house and was met by my mother coming outside... seems she wasnt' wearing shoes, and both of her feet were numb because electricity had run through the floor.... that had to be odd, also...

once inside, we started hearing strange noises from around the house, and we tried to track them all down... I can not explain the freakiness of hearing the phone's dialtone AFTER you hang it up... we had two phones do that... just isn't right... and it gets better... the pulse of electricty that ran through the floor turned on some of my sister's electronic games that were in her floor... they just came on... also not right... and it gets better, still... it seems that if something was on, it wouldn't turn off, and if it was off, it wouldn't come on... the satellite was fried, but wouldn't turn off, the vcr wouldn't turn on, thank God that He spared the PS2... yes, my God is a benevolent God, but He is not without wrath, and it befell our computers... (no, I don't really think God singled out my computers, but it really adds to the story, no?) So the two computers that were setting on the desk were fried... After several hours, I tracked the problem on my computer down to the modem... it's fubar... I don't know if it fried anything on the motherboard, but it will not POST if the modem is in... take it out and it seems to start to boot ok... haven't got a chance to spend more time on it... I'm not terribly concerned since my new board will be in on thursday/friday... problem is my parents' board... it's toast... it's the board, too... everything is onboard... I tried swapping PS and a few other things, but it's dead... no, it's worse than that... it's dead, Jim... I guess the good news is that when my new board comes in, I can pop my old board into their computer... problem is my mb has nothing onboard... let's see... from the upgrade I'll have a mb, PII 400, 256 meg ram, video card... still need a sound card, modem... I guess that's not too bad...

I ordered my new computer ::dances around the room:: In 3 days I will have a new 1.67 Ghz computer (dual board, single processor) with 512 Meg ram, with a GeForce 4 Ti4600 for graphics... now tell me that isn't sweet, especially coming off of a PII 400 with a Voodoo2 card! :) Whenever the prices come down, I'll pop in another MP 2000+ and have my dual athalon computer that I've been dreaming about for a while :)

in other news... wait... there's really not any other news... nothing has happened today. I did have my substitute boss (long story) come into my office this morning with a palm pilot/mini PC the likes of which I've never seen before. He hands it to me and says "you know how to work one of those things?" At this point, I should note I was wiping drool off of my shoes because I just knew he was gonna give it to me for the summer. So I say for the most part, yes, and he says, good, cause I need help... I had to stiffle a DOH! but I helped him... he couldn't figure out how to link it to his computer, so I installed the software and showed him how... no handheld computer for me... :(

hello and welcome to this edition of my blog... No, I don't have much to say today, either, but let's see what's on the list...

I get to see Deedee in a few hours :) can't wait... seeing deedee is good :) better than good :)

I get to upgrade my computer this weekend.. it's gonna be nice. I'll say more about that when I get it done.

I went to a meeting yesterday with all the construction supervisors and I took a few notes... not about what was being said, but more about the people there... There were only a few type of people, and you can tell which type they are by the clothes they wore... here are my observations:

--pale yellow button downs.. there were 3 of these... these are brave people.. anyone who wares yellow is brave... These people are executives and they're well paid... To build a house they need only a cell phone and a nice pen to sign paychecks...

--white polo shirts... 5 of these.. These are the young, clean cut supervisors just out of college out to make a name for themselves by impressing people... To build a house they need a budget, schedule, and a good pair of shoes...

--plaid buttondowns... 3 of these... These guys are old and established.. They might have built houses for the army core of engineers at one time or another... To build a house they need blueprints, a ruler, tape measure, and a skill saw...

--t shirt with jeans or jean shorts... 8 of these... These guys are older and slightly overweight. They've been building houses for a while, and they know their stuff... They aspire to wear a tank top one day (see below) To build a house they need a pencil, a pad of paper, and a really good secretary to cover their rear end when they forget something.

--tank top, shorts, sunglasses, and a muddy baseball cap... there was only 1 of these at the meeting. This guy's in his early to mid 40's; he's tall, all muscle, and very tan. This guy builds houses in his sleep. He wasn't born with a hammer in his hand, but he did build a small shelter in his mother's womb because he was tired of being wet. All this guy needs to build a house is a can of tobacco, a couple of trees, and a box of nails... nails are optional...

dad gum it, I want my own office... I sit in here with nothing to do, so the other office guy gets up and leaves, and he's been busy up frontfor a while, so I'm thinking, hey, I'll make a phone call... but everytime I pick up the phone, some old guy comes in here and just stands over my shoulder... so I put the phone down and wait for him to leave, and he leaves, so I pick the phone up, and dad gum it if he doesn't reappear and just stand there... what is the guy, the phone nazi???

I have found another comparison between men and dogs... If you feed a dog a piece of meat, he's happy/content, but if you dangle that meat in front of him and then take it away, he'll drool over it for hours... yup, guys are like that, only it's probably gonna be days and weeks instead of hours....

I read MegaTokyo today... no, I mean I read it... alllll of it... yup... add one addicted reader... I didn't get to read all of the text and rants that went with all the comics... The last one was interesting, though... it's now strictly one person... only one person on the by line now... that's fine and all as long as it keeps going :) I cannot even begin to say how typical it would be if it died right as I started reading it... I guess that's just how things work... oh well...

Some loud mouthed subcontractor came and read over my shoulder before lunch and then proceeded to yell and scream around the entire office that all I was doing back here was reading comics... I tried to explain to him that I've finished my work and I can't do anything without approval of the boss, but he wouldn't have any of it... he just wanted to run around causing a scene because I was reading comics... He finally shut up... and I got back to my reading :)

Saw windtalkers... don't want to say anything to give away the movie, but it's definately worth seeing.. and see it in a theater that has good sound :) trust me...

I own a gun... now let me explain... I'm driving back from Huntsville, where Brian and I spent the weekend visiting Deedee (and had lots and lots of fun because Deedee is a wonderful host and just really fun to be around), and Brian and I are talking about random things. So we drive for a while, and in the middle of Duran Duran's "Hungry like the Wolf" I had a completely random thought: I own a gun. I haven't thought of it in years. It's a 410 shotgun, jr. model, that I got for Christmas before my 11th or 12th birthday. I've only shot it 6 times... Twice to get used to it, and then I shot a squirrel... I shot him (and hit him) 4 times before he finally died... I was expecting this sort of instant death thing, and I felt soooo bad that it took me 4 shots to kill the poor thing, that I didn't go hunting again... So the shotgun has sat out at my grandmother's, in her gun cabinet for years... and I hadn't thought of it for years... until yesterday... So guess what was sitting in the den when I got home (yes, you can see it coming)... It was a gun cabinet, and sitting in the gun cabinet was my shotgun... See, my dad owns a couple of guns, but he keeps them out at his mother's because we didn't have any way to lock them up... Well, Grandma bought a gun safe, and Dad got her locking gun cabinet for father's day... And now my shotgun is in the den...

There's a problem, though... It's a junior model shotgun... it's too small for me to shoot... so, like I was discussing with brian in the car, I'm now thinking about turning it into a gun that I can actually use... The question is what kind of gun to get... Since I don't do much hunting, the question also depends on what I'm gonna do with the gun once I get it... So there's three obvious choices -- shotguns, rifles, and handguns... The only thing to do with shotguns, if you don't hunt, is trap shoot... It's not like you can target shoot with a shotgun... Rifles would be pretty good for target shooting, but they're not something you can transport real easy, and both shotguns and rifles are going to require a large locking case... Handguns would be ok for target shooting... not so much accuracy, but maybe a bit more fun than rifles... Plus a handgun can have a much smaller case, which makes transport a bit easier... Plus, if I ever did feel compelled, I could carry a handgun with me (with the proper permits, of course)... You can't carry a rifle without upsetting people... but that's the problem... would I feel compelled? I make fun of certain, unnamed people for being obsessed with their guns, and while I would never be that bad, how upset would people be if I carried a gun?

Anyway... what do you think?

attention all gamers: We ARE playing tonight... right? :) Well, I'm going to play tonight... Other characters are allowed to show up... as usual, not showing up gives me free reign with your character :)

I got called out into the field today at 8:05... hadn't even finished eating my breakfast when I got the call... I just got back a few minutes ago, and I have to get this revised schedule done and then take it back out into the field in two hours... fun fun fun... but hey! I'm actually doing work!!! :) I'm in the field this afternoon, then I have a meeting tomorrow morning, and back in the field that afternoon... friday I only work half day (because they won't pay me overtime) and then I get to go see Deedee!!! :)

Well wouldn't you know it, my boss showed up for about two minutes yesterday, and in that two minutes, he gave me the go ahead for the next week's worth of work. Basically, take the schedule I have and go show it to the construction secretaries in the field to see what they have to say about it (since they're the only ones who really know what's going on anyways). So I made a few phone calls and setup my first field interview for yesterday "anytime after 2". Ya wanna know what's fun about working in the field? The fact that I don't have someone staring into my right ear. You know what that means? It means that I left at 1:20... just enough time to eat a 30 minute lunch and make it to the trailer off church road at 2. So I made it there around 2:30-2:45, and yet I only recorded a 30 minute lunch... hmmmm... where does the time go? Well, in this particular instance, I was NOT eating lunch... The fact that I was watching the end of "Dirty Dancing" has very little importance in the grand scheme of things.
I really need to work in the field more often.

Well, apparently, after catching up on reading everyone else's blogs, I see that I am not a unique soultype... Apparently, everyone is either passionate or down-to-earth... There is nothing else. You are one or the other.

Let's see... what else is happening. I was not early for work this morning. No, I wasn't late, I just was on time. I had planned to come in early, but as I was walking out the door, my brother comes running around the corner with a bag in his hand saying I was supposed to take him to a friend's house this morning. Wonderful... why didn't anyone tell me about this? Anyways, this friend naturally lived across town, so rather than being half an hour early, I was exactly one minute late (which counts as on time in my book).

Also, I'm putting out a call for people to play yahoo games online. This week will be incredibly slow for me. I can't do anything without my boss, and he's gone for the entire week this week. So if there's anyone interested in dominos or battleship, etc., let me know! :)

I thought this was pretty good, so I'll throw it out there for the masses:

I'm completely down-to-earth!

Find your soul type
at kelly.moranweb.com.

You are the most in touch with knowledge. It's the tree of life from which you tap the sap. You know what you want and you know how to reasonably get it.

Virtues: You respect people with plans. When someone has their head on their shoulders, you know that they can see straightforward and keep their eyes on the mark. When it comes to looking at the future, you take a logical approach: what's within your ability? A fortunate attribute that you have is the ability to set a goal for yourself, higher than maybe you feel possible, but still keep yourself within reasonable bounds. You take the time to appreciate those surrounding you and they do appreciate you in return. Decision-making comes naturally to you when you take the time to consider each option. People only come to talk to you when they are looking for a logical, reasonable solution.

Aspirations: You have an idea of what you can do with your life, but you push it up a notch. You need a profession that you can enjoy, so work towards it. You want to live near your friends and family while being as far away as possible. You also want to settle down while working in excitement and variation.

Quirks: You don't appreciate drama queens and they don't appreciate you. When they need help, they won't seek you out because of your ability to see through their overly dramatic predicaments. You have leeway for humor, and sometimes love to participate in it, but when it becomes irrational behavior, others can count you out. Loud noises are bothersome, except when they come from you or your friends.

Factors: Reach for the sky! Don't decide to do something because you're merely good at it, but choose something you might like to do, despite whether you're sure you can master it or not. Don't only save room for a few empathetic friends, but open up to everyone.

Future: When looking for a job, if you work in all of your talents (logic, decision-making, planning, and definitely humor), you'll find yourself happy. Come to a compromise for location; live nearby your friends and take periodic vacations or live farther away and take frequent return trips.

Yeah, I thought it was enough like me to actually bother copying and pasting here...

I guess I did have something to write about...
:: posted by Tmber :: 4:36 PM ::

I feel like blogging... but I have not a thing to write... not really, anyways... I had hoped something would come to me... I did have one thought, but it's kinda vague.. .but hey, it's been a while since I've been vague, so let's be vague...

disclaimer: this vagueness is not even vaguely connected to other vaguenesses that are being vaguely discussed with other peoples...

poetry... you know, with everyone posting some kind of poetry or talking about writing stories on their blogs, I almost wish I still did creative writing. Most people might not peg me for being a writer, but I am/used to be. I have a novel floating around in my mind. It's been there for two, almost three years now; and it's all there, start to finish. The characters are defined and have physical description as well as attitudes. The places are all in my mind, with some even on paper... I used to have all the dialog, but it's fading away... it's all fading away... Every day I don't write, another page slips from my mind, but I just don't have time to write... One of my initial motivations for starting the blog was to have a place to type little things to myself when I felt like it without having to be behind my computer, but well... it just turned into something completely different :) which isn't bad... :)

oh, back to poetry... I guess one thing that bothers me is I've completely stopped writing poetry. It wasn't a gradual thing... I just stopped. And it really is something that bothers me... Any time I have tried to write any poetry since then, I cannot help but think of the last poem I wrote... It was pretty much the best poem I've ever written, but it wasn't the one that won me a medal in poetry (which yes, I have one), in fact, the last poem I wrote has never been shown to anyone, except maybe one. It really was something to write... It just came out... Most of the time, if I wanted poetry to rhyme, or be in a certain rhythm, I had to think about it or work with the words, but this one just sprang out, all at once, without ever correcting anything. The entire thing was written in a matter of moments, and in leaving me that quickly, it left a scar... I guess you could say that you really have to cut deep to pour out that much so quickly. So now when I look inside to that place where all poetry should come from, I can't help but see the scar and turn away...

It's kind of ironic, but my appropriate quote of the day has now become an extremely appropriate quote of the day:

"As memory may be a paradise from which we cannot be driven, it may also be a hell from which we cannot escape." -- John Lancaster Spalding (1840 - 1916)

Edward VII, Duke of Windsor, is credited with inventing the Windsor knot, when in fact, it was created by his father, George V.

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

A Hierophant (HY-er-uh-font) is an interpreter or explainer of arcane knowledge or cults.

Today is Dr. Ruth's birthday.
